Is this a good idea?

I’m thinking of getting a 2.7t motor loose and completely rebuilding it with Stage 3 parts (Sans turbochargers), as well as replacing pretty much anything and everything that could go wrong due to age before I actually get an B5 S4.

I’m 100% intent on getting a B5 S4. I’ve wanted one for years.

Why would you ever do that to yourself.

Because I like S4s.

Yeah they're really good if they're running.

With the B5 S4 the key is to be one the ball with preventative maintenance, and get a car with a solid history. The B6 S4 will be more reliable up until the point your timing chain tensioners go.

I’m not new at all to the Audi world. I’ve owned three in the past, I’m on a Volkswagen at the moment though.

No I know, but the preventative maintenance tip is even more true for the B5 S4 than most other Non-S trims from what I gather.

My A6 had the exact same engine/drivetrain as the S4 and never had any real issues as far as randomly breaking down goes. Only thing I really got from it is that simple wear items are expensive to repair.

As I said in the post, I’d be replacing pretty much everything that could go wrong and once I get the actual car, I’ll be able to replace things like the fuel pump.

I read that as a Chrysler 2.7. Didn’t see the t. I was sooo confused for a moment.

Yea I remember. My A6 had the 4.2L until.... I now dream of an A8, but something tells me it’s a bad idea for now.

The 2.7T though.. used turbos scare me. You never know how much the car’s been hooned. But if you’re gonna rebuild stuff beforehand and get it ready for the car, I would include the turbos if you can afford it.

I also have a cousin in Europe that deals with buying, fixing and selling wrecked cars, and they generally avoid the S-trim Audis as there’s more hidden faults with them.

I’d probably end up replacing them with Frankenturbo F21s after I actually get the S4 itself. I think I can pull together a decent build for ~$10,000. Either that, or go with the budget method and get rebuilt K03s and just get a conservative tune of some sort.

For me, it’s less of a reliability thing, but more of a passion for the car thing. I’ve owned a B5 A4, which I loved, then a C5 A6, which I loved. And now a brand new Jetta, which I kinda hate.
